Action Pact Development helps senior living providers transform nursing homes from traditional institutions to residential homes where elders drive their own lives. New models are emerging that require new thinking, new processes, new designs, and new ways of operating. We specialize in these new models and in helping providers create and sustain them.

In Steve Shields and LaVrene Norton’s book, In Pursuit of the Sunbeam; A Practical Guide to Transformation from Institution to Household, the authors say home is a basic human necessity and that safety, freedom and observed privacy boundaries within what we all define as home are fundamental human rights. Further, not only is it possible to create home for frail elders in small groups, provision of such is also a moral obligation we share as nursing home owners and managers. The institutional nursing home, the authors add, is a public place where people reside and does not meet the definition of a home. Therefore, they conclude, people who reside in nursing homes are in fact homeless with a roof over their heads. Judith Carboni’s comparative study of the life of the homeless and nursing home residents is a stark reality check for those who have become numb to that fact.
